Whiplash, the cause, effect and treatment by Dr. Cary Yurkiw, DC

I see many patients in the clinic with Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD).  According to the NIH, WAD is "Whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) is the term given for the collection of symptoms affecting the neck that is triggered by an accident with an acceleration-deceleration mechanism such as a motor vehicle accident."

WAD is not only caused by car accidents, but I see many athletes that have whiplash-like symptoms from sports injuries.  Sometimes, these injuries are accompanied by concussions.

In my experience, with over 27 years of practice in Chiropractic, seeing hundreds of whiplash patients, I recommend the following:

1. Early intervention, including seeing a Chiropractor within the first few days after injury
2. Rest, ice and heat depending on the area involved and the severity of the symptoms
3. Treatment, including mobilization of the tissues and joints to avoid scar tissue formation and chronic symptoms
4. Adjustments to re-position the structure and improve the function of the joints, to promote healing and repair of tissues
5. Supports like pillows, neck brace, and modifications to Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
6. Yoga, stretches, and exercises to get the patient involved in the care
7. Finally, core strengthening to support the work done in the clinic and make the body strong to prevent relapses
